Continue ShoppingViewing the earth from an aerial perspective, I am presented with constant change. Moment by moment the relationships between light, atmosphere & location collaborate with my own physical point of view to present a myriad of visual opportunities, often fleeting but each unique in their own way. From this state of constant flux, I choose a single moment on which to begin my musings, exploring and seeking a derivative from that moment that speaks to me … one that will speak for itself.
Why then, why now, what is it that inspires, provokes, triggers me to choose one moment over another? There are many creative decisions made, each contributing to the final piece, and each final piece a single derivative from a sea of possibilities. The viewer sees the outcome of the choices made, but not the decisions.
I’m not sure how I get there …, I know I am drawn to inherent beauty and design, and sometimes visual analogies and sometimes it’s just a ‘feeling’, an ‘instinct’, like looking for something I’m not sure of but knowing I will recognise it when I find it.
The individual images in this collection are an exploration of these derivatives, captured over salt lakes and tidal areas of Western Australia including Shark Bay, Roebuck Bay and King Sound, with a couple of images coming from Kati Thanda – Lake Eyre, in South Australia. The original images are photographed from a light aircraft or helicopter with the doors off, using medium format cameras to enable high levels of detail and colour dynamics.
They are unique aspects of my own visual musings and explorations, simultaneously 'real' & 'interpretive', and offering both literal & abstract expressions of the landscape as seen from above.
In the context of this collection, each final piece represents just one of an infinite number of directions that could have been taken and present as a visual representation of my instinctive responses and personal reflections. From the moment of seeing through to resolving the final image, I follow my own curious nature and explore the potential outcomes from the original experience. This creative journey reminding me that we always have a choice, and asking the question … what next?
. . . I invite you to pause in the moment and consider the derivatives you might choose going forward. HEWITT
